Community-Based Organizations

For more than 35 years, RHLS has provided free legal services to community-based nonprofit organizations engaged in affordable housing, economic development, and community renewal activities.

We provide development services that include:

  • legal and technical assistance for the development, rehabilitation and preservation of affordable housing (rental and homeownership)
  • guidance on options for blight removal/low-cost property acquisition
  • solutions for innovative projects
  • legal and technical assistance with economic development projects
  • referrals to other legal services providers, private attorneys, government officials and policy makers, and public and private funders who can help find innovative solutions to the issues you want to address.

We devise and implement critical policy initiatives designed to solve hard problems in affordable housing and community development on the local, state and national level:

  • facilitating revisions to state law to ensure that affordable housing projects were not subject to excessive real property tax and to make it easier for nonprofits to acquire blighted properties
  • expert analysis of proposed regulations and laws concerning affordable housing, economic development, and community renewal
  • making recommendations for changes to funding processes to improve the reach and effectiveness of existing funding
