A recent blog post from Julia Isaacs for the MetroTrends blog (Urban Institute) highlights calls children the invisible victims of the foreclosure crisis. Julia estimated that “8 million American children, or more than one in 10 kids, have been or will be affected by the nation’s foreclosure crisis”.
Although most of foreclosure-related attention focuses on owner-occupied properties, millions of Americans are renters in properties that go into foreclosure.
Julia estimates that of the 8 million, 5.3 million children live in owner-occupied homes. Of those, 2.3 million have already lost their homes due to foreclosure, but 3.0 million are in homes that are seriously delinquent and at immediate risk of foreclosure.
