My name is Lauren Berman, and I am so excited to be joining PULP as a Staff Attorney. I’ll be splitting my time between direct representation of individual clients, and assisting on larger scale cases.
I spent my undergraduate years in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan where I graduated with a BA in Economics and concentration in Russian language. Post-graduation I spent a few years working in retail merchandising before deciding to attend law school at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law. It was working in Detroit immediately after the Great Recession where I began to understand access to safe and affordable housing as a fundamental human right.
My most recent position prior to joining PULP was with the Fair Housing Law Center, a project of Southwestern Pennsylvania Legal Aid. There I represented clients who required accommodations due to disability or had been discriminated against in their housing, most commonly due to disability or gender. Prior to that position, I had taken a brief ‘retirement’ from my law practice during which I ran a local political campaign, worked as the development manager for a small arts non-profit, and sang professionally with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.
I try to spend as much of my free time as possible hiking in the middle of nowhere with my dog, Amadeus, and I get out to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming at least once a year. I also love to cook and bake, although a downside of remote work is that I can’t then bring baked goods into the office to share with my new colleagues.
