Last week, our long-time partner and client, ACTION-Housing, Inc., celebrated the ribbon cutting for their innovative affordable housing development, Uptown Lofts on Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh.
The building includes 24 units of housing for youth aging out of foster care and 23 units for low-income workers. In addition to providing critical housing resources, the building is a model in energy-efficient construction. The development was the first project to win the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency’s Innovation in Design Award.
Uptown Lofts on Fifth Avenue is currently renting to applicants with incomes at or below 60 percent of the area median income.
Regional Housing Legal Services provided extensive legal services to the project, with a portion of the project’s funding derived from Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC).
Uptown Lofts on Fifth Avenue represents a significant victory, as the focus on youth required RHLS to establish that LIHTCs could indeed be utilized to serve youth aging out of foster care and would not violate a prohibition relating to housing students in LIHTC units.
