RHLS Bid Farewell to Our 2026 Summer Legal Interns.

Providing training opportunities in affordable housing law to aspiring attorneys is an important part of our role in the legal services sector. This year, we were lucky enough to host three law students.  Leanne Almeida, rising 2L a Temple Law, came to us through the Martin Luther King, Jr. Summer Internship Program of the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network. We also hosted John David Barnett, a rising 2L student at Temple Law School, and Becki Marcus, a 2L rising student at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.


While at RHLS, the summer students were able to engage with a variety of the work that we do that results in the development of affordable housing.
Leanne worked with our policy and development teams reviewing and commenting on several important agreements, such as sale and purchase, loan closing, non-LIHTC funding and property transfers for multiple clients. John David reviewed contracts between our clients and the architects and general contractor. Becki reviewed nonprofit organizations’ bylaws and joint representation agreements, and worked on several closing binders, which are the organization of every document in a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit deal.


Reviewing documents might not sound like the most interesting thing to do, but the accuracy and integrity of a lease purchase agreement can make or break a deal. Affordable housing developers might be operating with a small staff, and unable to mediate each issue as it arises. Our clients need a solid contract that clarifies roles and responsibilities in these large development projects.  Likewise, reviewing a tenant selection plan can safeguard against potential discrimination against future residents. This is work that will have a positive, demonstrable impact on people living in affordable housing.
