Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Tenant’s Guide

The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) is a federal program that awards tax credits to housing developers. LIHTC may have helped fund the creation of your home.

If you live in a LIHTC funded home, rent is not based on the income of the tenant, but on a percentage of the area median income for your county. Property managers of LIHTC-funded housing may use other means to further lower the rent, such as housing vouchers. Tenants living in homes funded using LIHTC have some special rights and protections.

RHLS has created a guide for Tenants searching for or living in LIHTC-funded homes to learn more about how it works, what rights and protections they may have, and other useful information.

You can download the guides in English and in Spanish:

RHLS has a limited number of guides printed each year for use by community service providers or government agencies. If you are interested in getting printed versions of the guide, please contact communicationsadmin@rhls.org.
If you are a community service provider or advocate interested in receiving more training and guidance on LIHTC for Tenants, check out our Speaker’s Bureau page to submit an inquiry.
